At least 85% of seniors will graduate this year

According to Greene County School Superintendent Isaac Atkins, a least 85% of this year’s senior class will graduate in May. This figure represents 20 more graduates than last year.
During this coming summer, there will be remediation classes for seniors who did not pass the required exams.
If, on completion of these classes, a student does pass the exams, a graduation exercise will be held at the high school in August.
The 86% graduation rate is the highest in recent years.
“Next year we will have to improve to 86% to make AYP,” said Atkins.
There were three special presentations made during the regular meeting of the Greene County Board of Education:
*Teachers who made a difference during the past month. These teachers are selected by the vote of their fellow teachers.
*Teachers who had perfect attendance for the past month.
*A retirement presentation to Ms. Nancy Cole who has taught in the system for 38 years.
In other business, the board:
*Approved a financial report showing an income of $927,118.90 and expenditures of $1,108,343.72. Cash and cash equivalency amounts to $4,387,175.73.
*Approved June 1, 2011 as a make-up work day for employees (pending approved of the State Superintendent).
*Approved the employment of Mrs. Patricia Coleman as Manager for the Summer Feeding Program at the rate of $10 per hour; the employment of Ms. Mary Hill, Ms. Leola Smith and Ms. Linda Davis as cooks for the Summer Feeding Program at $9 per hour and the employment of Ms.Linda Moore as Monitor/Janitor for the Summer Feeding Program.
*Approved sending letters of termination for all “Additional Services”.
*Approved non-renewal of Mrs. Sheanell Edwards as Math Intervention teacher at Paramount Jr. High.
*Approved non-renewal of all non-tenured employees,
*Approved teachers and bus drivers for the Summer Smart Camp, a 25 day program specifically designed to promote academic excellence for 4th and perspective 9th graders

Greene County High inducts 19 students into Eunice R. Outland Chapter of the National Honor Society


On Friday, May 13, 2011 Greene County High inducted 19 students into the newly formed Eunice R. Outland Chapter of the National Honor Society. The inductees included Ashley Alexander, Amber Bowden, Jasmine Byrd, Earnest Clark, Khadijah Coleman, Gerald Gaines, Kwadijayln Hamilton, Carl Henderson, Mary Henderson, Jaderrian Holman, Jasmaria Johnson, TyReice Mack, Nicholas L. Pearson, Rakeem Pham, Angela Prewitt, Lakendrick Taylor, Natasha Vester, Chalise Washington and Janelle Wesley. The chapter was named for Outand, a former principal, who was the first Black female teacher in the previously all-white Eutaw High School, and later became the first Black principal of Eutaw High, which was later renamed Greene County High School. Greene County High School dedicated its reinstated Chapter of the National Honor Society to former principal Eunice R. Outland.



Mrs. Outland served as Principal of Eutaw High School for 17 years. The NHS Chapter had been active during her tenure. Mrs. Outland was presented a special plaque in recognition and appreciation of her contributions to education in Greene County. Outland served as a Business and English teacher at Paramount High School prior to serving as a teacher and principal at Eutaw High, now Greene County High.

Fire fighters from all over Greene County rush to fire at roofing plant in Eutaw


When the call to the Eutaw Fire Department came in at approximately 3:31 pm. on Thursday, May 12, that United Roofing on Finches Ferry Road was on fire, volunteer fire departments from all over Greene County and even as far away as Livingston rushed to the site to offer assistance,
Co-owner Judy Livingston said the fire was confined to one production warehouse. “The fire was extinguished due to the outstanding efforts of five local volunteer fire departments contributing manpower and equipment and manpower from a sixth volunteer fire department. No one was injured in the fire or thereafter during the stabilization and clean up efforts. Production resumed at 7 a.m Friday morning and we have been running and shipping product around the clock since then.”
Eutaw Assistant Fire Chief Stanley Lucius said that volunteer fire departments from Eutaw, Union, Forkland, Boligee, Lower Gainesville Road, Dollarhide, Springfield and Livingston were all there as quickly as possible to battle the blaze. The engines stayed on site, because there were materials inside the plant that could have caused explosions.
The water hoses were also used to cool down equipment and bins containing chemicals.
Despite the size of the fire and possibly due to the quick response to the call, the plant was saved and no one was injured.

HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan pledges to rebuild tornado ravaged Alabama ‘better and stronger’

Standing on the ruins of Rosedale Courts, public housing project in Tuscaloosa, HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan, pledged to rebuild Tuscaloosa and other storm affected communities in the state “better and stronger than they were before the tornados on April 15 and 27.
At a press conference after a tour of the devastation where 100 out of 188 units were destroyed and 11 people died, Donovan joined by other political leaders said over $12 million dollars in HUD Community Development Block Grant funds could be used in a flexible way to respond to the needs to rebuild community facilities and the basic housing stock in the state.
Donovan said funds were available to the state and municipalities from the Section 108 loan program against future CDBG funding. There is also emergency housing assistance from FEMA and mobile homes which will be brought in by state and Federal emergency management officials to house persons temporarily for up to 18 months whose homes were totaled by the fierce tornados.
When pressed by this reporter, Secretary Donovan said, “the government is concerned about every person and family in the area; those that live in cities like Tuscaloosa and also those who live in the surrounding rural communities, like Sawyerville, Tishabee Snoddy, Vienna, Lisman.
Mayor Maddox of Tuscaloosa said that the state and Federal government needed to be commended for coming together rapidly to work on solutions. Senator Richard Shelby said, “ you will be judged in this tornado relief effort by what you do. We welcome your presence and that of President Obama. We hope these visits will serve the purpose and help stir things up in the bureaucracy to get assistance to the people of Alabama.”
Congresswoman Terri Sewell, whose district from Birmingham to the Black Belt has been impacted by the tornados said “ I am inspired by the generosity of people helping people in the aftermath of these storms. I promise you that the low income and rural people of the district will not be forgotten.”
Ralph Paige from the Federation of Southern Cooperatives said, “ reflecting on Hurricane Katrina, we still have 400 people in south Mobile County that qualified for CDBG housing assistance but have never received it and are still waiting for it. I hope people in Tuscaloosa and the Black Belt will receive the assistance they need on a timely basis to rebuild their homes. We may need to ask Congress for special funding to cover these disaster needs.”
At the press conference, FEMA reported that 45,000 people had registered statewide to get assistance; 12,000 home inspections have been carried out; 300 displaced people are still living in shelters, while the rest have moved in with relatives, friends or neighbors; and some are living in hotels.

Disaster Recovery Center opens at Eutaw Activity Center

A FEMA Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) serving Greene County was set up Saturday, May 7 at the Eutaw Activity Center on Harris Avenue. The center is staffed by 4 representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), a representative from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and a Hazard Mitigation Official. The DRC is open to serve the community from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., 7 days a week until further notice.
The Greene County DRC manager, Don San Souci, stated that as of Tuesday, more than 100 persons affected by the recent tornado storms had visited the center to sign up with FEMA and enter the process.
San Souci explained that persons without access to a telephone and are seeking assistance can utilize phones set up at the Disaster Recovery Center in Eutaw. According to San Souci, this initial call is necessary to enter the process. Once the individual is registered the person will be assigned a 9 digit registration number.
Persons with insurance may also register with FEMA. They should bring their insurance records with them to the DRC or information to contact the respective companies.
Home owners and renters registering with FEMA will need to show personal identification as well as documents showing their home ownership or renter’s residency. If these basic documents were lost in the storms, individuals should contact governmental or utility offices for copies of records.
Once a person has entered the system, FEMA inspectors will contact the applicant to assess home and other property for damages. All FEMA applicants should provide a phone number for follow up contact from FEMA.
According to releases provided by FEMA Public Affairs Officer, Debra Young, “FEMA is working with all disaster survivors to determine their need for temporary housing.” The release further explained that FEMA’s initial attempt is to place disaster survivors in other existing housing, but in rural areas available rental housing is extremely limited. Mobile temporary housing may be the best option.
Greene County Interim EMA Director, Iris Sermon, has taken a lead role in coordinating the various agencies and volunteers trying to assist individuals, families and businesses affected by the storms of the last two weeks.
Two FEMA public informational sessions have already been held, one through the Greene County Rotary Club in Eutaw on last Thursday and one at White Oak Church, Mantua, last Friday evening. A third is scheduled for Thursday, May 12 at 6:00 p.m. at the Forkland Town Hall. These sessions alert communities on how to report and present damage and loss claims through FEMA and related agencies. The basic number to register with FEMA is 1800-621-3362.

Eutaw Council locks 3-3 on choosing Coleman as police chief

The Eutaw City Council, at their regular meeting on Tuesday, May 10, were unable to reach an agreement on a new police chief.
After a lenghthy executive session, Mayor Raymond Steele proposed Derrick Coleman, a sargeant with the Eutaw Police Department, as chief.. A motion was made and seconded, but the council could not agree.
Voting in favor of Coleman were Steele and Councilmembers Ralph Liverman and David Spencer.
Voting against Coleman were Councilmembers Shelia Smith, Joe Powell and Hattie Edwards.
This leaves Asst. Police Chief Luther Davis as the highest ranking officer in the department.
There has been no police chief in Eutaw since the unexpected death of Chief Tommy Summerville on December 9, 2010.
In other business, the council:
*Discussed the CDBG grant for the city water tank. Steele advised the council that ADECA had not received the expected amount of funding so the grant had been cut to $320,000. “This would make our matching amount $50,000,” said Steele.
“This is a $50,000 cut,” said Steele, “so we cannot do all we planned but we can repair the water tank,” he said.
On a vote of 4-1, with Smith voting no, the motion to apply for the grant passed.
*Unanimously approved a Municipal Water Pollution Prevention Resolution. This is something done on an annual basis and required no discussion,
*Discussed repairing the bridge on Springfield Avenue. “It needs attention,” said Spencer.
“It has been inspected by a bridge inspector,” replied Steele. No further action was taken.
*Approved payment of bills and claims, with Powell questioning the need for so much repair work on city work vehicles. “Our employees need to pay more attention to how they use this equipment,” he said.
